Youth Combat Pale Letter for March 2008

Acelina of Derelei and Sean o’Shaughnessy wish all youth combatants, parents, and youth marshals a warm spring.  In our last Pale letter, we talked about the implementation of the SCA Background Check Policy.  This letter is a follow up on Background Checks.  First of all, we wish to thank all of the youth marshals and regional youth marshals who helped us put together the youth marshal roster and contact information needed by the SCA corporate office for the checks.  Secondly, we would like to thank Baroness Alex with her help in compiling the list and to Baroness Maddalena who sent out the background check application forms.  Lastly, we would like to thank all the youth marshals who sent in their paperwork to the SCA corporate office after the program kicked off on February 15, 2008.  We are happy to report that the first completed background checks are being reported throughout the entire SCA youth combat community.  We need to communicate the specifics of how background checks affect the conduct of youth combat practices, youth combat tourneys at events, and the training of our youth combatants.

The Honorable Lady Acelina of Derelei and Master Sean O’Shaughnessy send greetings to all youth combatants and their parents.  We have returned from a successful Pennsic War where over 180 youth participated in youth combat sessions over 9 days.  We held four different tournaments involving youth combatants from as far away as Lochac.  A good time was had by all.

Greetings to all Youth Combatants, Parents, and Marshals

The dead of winter is upon us.  However, with the growing number of events that include Youth Combat, I hope that you are honing your skills and continuing the expansion of your knowledge in your martial art.

Something has come to my attention that needs to be addressed with a rule clarification.  Boffer weapons are NEVER, under any circumstances, to be “weighted” for any reason.  The construction materials for boffer weapons consist of golf tubes and closed cell foam for Division one, and Schedule 40 PVC pipe and closed cell foam for Divisions two and three.  We are currently allowing an experimental weapon for Division one which uses a PVC handle only, with hollow foam for the blades of the weapons, but that is the ONLY exception currently being allowed.  During and since Pennsic, we (i.e., the marshals) have found materials IN the PVC pipe, and metal washers on the pommel end.  While one was explained as being done to help balance the sword, it’s still not allowed.  The other was just blatantly wrong, but not from our Kingdom, and dealt with accordingly.
